Geek Mountain State is pleased to present Vermont Tales of Science & Fantasy, the latest installment of our Vermont SF Writer’s Series! This event will take place on Saturday, June 27th at 2pm at the Fletcher Free Library in Burlington. Readers this time around will include Alice Eckles, Asher Ellis, AmyBeth Inverness, Toby MacNutt, Michael J. Martinez and Amy J. Murphy!
This event follows a very successful year in which hundreds of listeners listened to dozens of Vermont storytellers in places such as Quarterstaff Games, Phoenix Books, The Fletcher Free Library, the Burlington Writer’s Workshop and the Center for Cartoon Studies.
Here’s our roster of authors who will be reading:
Alice Eckles is the author of a Phrase Book for Spiritual Emergencies, and publishes artisanal batches of poetry and prose that she sells from her honey booth at farmers markets and other events since she is also a beekeeper, shiitake grower and homesteader. Her writing has appeared in a number of publications including The Seattle Review and Nomads Choir. After studying printmaking and sculpture at Bennington College, she went on to earn her Master’s of Education from Antioch new England Graduate School, with Waldorf Certification. She worked as a professional artist and art teacher in Vermont for many years before devoting herself to writing. Eckles has participated in a Vermont Studio Center Residency and the Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference. She lives with her life’s companion Ross Conrad in a yurt without electricity or running water, where they plan to build a cordwood house.
Asher Ellis is the author of, The Remedy, his debut horror novel from Full Fathom Five Digital. He currently lives in his hometown of Ludlow, Vermont (where there are far fewer cannibals than his novel may suggest.) A graduate of the Stonecoast MFA in Creative Writing program at the University of Southern Maine, he has written award winning short stories, plays, and films. When Asher isn’t killing college students on the pages of his fiction, he teaches them as a creative writing and English professor at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire.
A writer by birth, a redhead by choice, and an outcast of Colorado by temporary necessity, AmyBeth Inverness is a creator of Speculative Fiction and Romance. She can usually be found tapping away at her laptop, writing the next novel or procrastinating by posting a SciFi Question of the Day on Facebook and Google Plus. When she’s not writing, she’s kept very busy making aluminum foil hats and raising two energetic kids and many pets with her husband in their New England home.
Toby MacNutt is an artist and teacher who works in dance, words, textiles, and mixed media visual arts. Short fiction by Toby has been published in Cripping Femme and is forthcoming in The Future Fire’s Accessing the Future;
hir first poetry publication is coming up in Goblin Fruit. Find Toby on twitter as @tylluan or at tobymacnutt.com
Michael J. Martinez is the author of the Daedalus trilogy, capped off by the newly released The Venusian Gambit. Mike is a long-time journalist and writer who got his professional start as an intern for The Bennington Banner 25 years ago. While he has roots in Vermont, by necessity he now lives in the greater New York City area with his fantastic wife, amazing daughter and a surprisingly sedate cat. He’s easily bribed with beer.
The shady underworld of the grade school essay black market was Amy J. Murphy‘s introduction to the possibility of writing things for money. Although real life intervened and her career path took a different direction from this gig, she continued to work on personal writing projects in the science fiction and horror genres.
Amy has a B.A. in communications from the University of New Orleans, and has attended the University of Minnesota and Vermont Technical College. Originally from New Orleans, Amy now shares a home with her husband and a very entitled dog in the lovely state of Vermont.
In 2014, Amy launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to self-publish the first book, Fallen, from the Allies and Enemies series. look for the ebook later this year. Visit amyjmurphy.com for updates.
