Hadestown Moves to the Stage

Anais Mitchell’s Hadestown is a treat to listen to. The concept album is a folk retelling of the  Ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, released in 2010. Now, the album is being adapted for the stage, according to a post on Mitchell’s facebook page:

dear friends, so thrilled that the new, expanded, staged version of HADESTOWN will be part of New York Theatre Workshop‘s 15/16 season! developed & directed by rachel chavkin (of TEAM & great comet fame)! can’t wait to share it with you. Thx to this venerable badass off-broadway theater for making a home for us!

making HADESTOWN has been a long journey (spanning almost 10 years at this point!) and it wouldn’t exist without arranger/orchestrator michael chorney, album producer todd sickafoose, original director and co-creator ben t. matchstick, the cast of the early shows in VT and several workshop versions since, righteous babe records, guest singers everywhere, dale franzen, mara isaacs & the broad stage, and ALL OF YOU who have supported this project in every way since the early days. THANK YOU

This is a pretty exciting thing to see happen. I’ve thought for a long time that it would make for a great stage production, and I’ll be very interested to see this in person.
