The Center for Cartoon Studies will once again be offering summer workshops for aspiring cartoonists and artists at their White River Junction campus with a variety of programs. Here’s the just-released schedule:
Create Comics, July 7-11, 2014
- Tuition: $900
- Ages 16+
Our 10th annual Create Comics workshop will walk you through exercises and group projects that will teach you about all aspects of making comics. You’ll learn page composition, character and environment design, a variety of inking techniques, and the skills needed to self-publish your own comics. At the end of the workshop, students will take their new skills and apply them to a collaborative comic anthology, which will be drawn, printed and bound so that everyone can take home a copy. There will also be portfolio reviews if you would like feedback on your comics from home. Create Comics works well for both beginning and advanced students, age 16 and over.
Applied Cartooning: An Educator’s Symposium, July 11 & 12, 2014
- Tuition: $75
- Create Comics + Educator’s Symposium special: $925
From design to empathy to literacy, cartooning can be a profound tool to teach adults and children critical skills. Through lectures, workshops, and panel discussions this symposium will explore the many ways that educators and librarians can use cartooning to enrich any school or organization’s programming and curriculum.
Graphic Novel Workshop, Session I: August 4-8, 2014 / Session II: August 11-15, 2014 / Optional online extension: August 18-October 10, 2014

- Optional online extension tuition: $1,200
- For-credit option: $400 for on campus workshop,
- $200 for online extension
- Ages 18+
Put everything else aside and only work on your comics for a week in White River Junction, Vermont. Workshop instructor Paul Karasik is a cartoonist (The New Yorker, City of Glass), a comics scholar (I Shall Destroy All The Civilized Planets, How To Read Nancy), and a renown teacher (CCS, RISD, SVA) who really knows how to take good cartoonists and make them better. During the week-long on-campus workshop, students will participate in lectures, collaborative exercises, book discussion sessions, events, and group critiques, with the goal of producing the first draft of a longer comics project. During the option 8-week online extension, students will develop and refine their work through online collaboration with faculty and peers, and complete comprehensive final drafts of their projects.

- Tuition: $950
- For-credit option: $400
